Ali Sabancı, Chairman of Esas Holding, drew major attention in Turkey after saying “I can’t make ends meet” during a talk on 26 December 2025. According to reports, the remark was made at Fast Company Türkiye’s year-end CEO Council event in Istanbul.

What spread most online was the phrase itself. However, Sabancı reportedly framed it as a comparison between his ambitions and his current position, adding that he meant it “compared to what I aspire to.” The speech also included references to the size of assets managed by the group.

Why did it go viral?
Because “can’t make ends meet” is strongly associated with day-to-day cost-of-living struggles, many people viewed the line as tone-deaf when coming from a high-profile business leader. The short, punchy wording also made it easy to clip and circulate without context.
