Who Was Cengiz Topel?

Cengiz Topel was born on September 2, 1934, in İzmit, Kocaeli. He began primary school in Bandırma and continued his education in Gönen and Istanbul.

After attending Haydarpaşa High School, Topel transferred to Kuleli Military High School and graduated in 1953. He completed his education at the Turkish Military Academy in 1955 and joined the Turkish Armed Forces as a second lieutenant.

Topel was later sent to Canada for pilot training. After successfully completing his aviation education, he returned to Türkiye in 1957 and began serving at the 5th Main Jet Base Command in Merzifon.

He was assigned to the 1st Main Jet Base in Eskişehir in 1961 and was promoted to the rank of captain in 1963.

What Happened in Cyprus on August 8, 1964?

In August 1964, attacks by Greek Cypriot forces against Turkish Cypriot settlements around Erenköy intensified. The assaults threatened both the Turkish Cypriot population and the strategically important defensive positions in the region.

Türkiye subsequently decided to conduct an air operation over Cyprus to deter the attacking forces and help protect the Turkish Cypriot community.

On August 8, 1964, Captain Cengiz Topel departed from Eskişehir as the commander of a four-aircraft formation. The mission was carried out using F-100 Super Sabre fighter jets.

During the operation, Topel’s F-100 was struck by ground-based anti-aircraft fire while preparing for another attack run.

Cengiz Topel Parachuted from His Damaged Aircraft

After his aircraft sustained critical damage, Cengiz Topel successfully ejected and descended by parachute.

He landed near the Greek Cypriot village of Peristeronori, located between the Turkish settlements of Lefke, Gaziveren, Elye and Çamlıköy. Greek Cypriot soldiers arrived in the area and took him prisoner.

According to Turkish sources, Topel was tortured and killed in violation of international laws governing the treatment of prisoners of war. The Greek Cypriot side claimed that he had been captured while wounded and later died in hospital.

Following intensive diplomatic efforts by Türkiye, Cengiz Topel’s body was returned on August 12, 1964.

Funeral ceremonies were held for Captain Cengiz Topel in Cyprus, Adana, Ankara and Istanbul.

He was laid to rest on August 14, 1964, at the Sakızağacı Air Martyrs’ Cemetery in Edirnekapı, Istanbul.

Topel became known as the first Turkish air warfare martyr in Cyprus and the first air warfare martyr of the Republic era.

The name of Captain Cengiz Topel has been given to numerous streets, neighbourhoods, schools, hospitals, public buildings and military facilities across Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

His memory is also preserved at the Martyr Pilot Captain Cengiz Topel Monument in the Lefke region of Northern Cyprus.

The memorial displays photographs, biographical information, historical images from his funeral ceremonies and parts recovered from his downed aircraft. A replica of the F-100 Super Sabre also stands near the monument.
